Zodiac: A-

A most unusual thing happened yesterday: Trese asked me to go see a movie about a serial killer. I guess you’d have to know Trese to know how weird that is. But I’m glad she did. At first Zodiac didn’t catch my eye at all. “Oh look, yet another serial killer movie. And one based on a true story, even better.”, I thought to myself. But I was quite mistaken.

Of course, it is a serial killer movie based on a true story, but it’s a good serial killer movie based on a true story. Jake Gyllenhaal does a fabulous job (and he’s really cute), and the rest of the cast keeps up with him every step. The writing is tight, the production is great, and the atmosphere is just the right kind of tense (which is in turn skillfully punctuated with just enough levity). Following both the intricacies of the plot and the toll it takes on the lives of those involved is quite enthralling. My only complaint is that it’s a touch long. I think it could have lost 20 minutes and helped the pacing a lot. But that’s a fairly minor complaint, this really is a great movie.

You should go see it. :)

…and it’s directed by David Fincher, who directed “Seven.” I’ll definitely rent it when it comes out on DVD.

But my movie of the week was 300, which is the best new movie I’ve seen in some time…

…the best “old” movie being The Thin Red Line, from the director of The New World. Best movie about war I’ve ever seen, and it’s one you would probably appreciate, Chris. And as far as war films go, it’s not horribly graphic…
