Taboo & Capitalism

I’ve just had an epiphany.  While pondering our culture’s twisted relationship with sex, I suddenly realized why it is disgraced on the one hand and sensationalized on the other.  Sex sells.  Or, more specifically, sex sells precisely because it’s maintained as a taboo.  If sexuality was something that everyone already has and can share with anyone who’s willing absolutely free, then they can’t sell it to us.  But by taking it away from us through denigration, they create a demand for which they can then provide a supply in the form of commoditized sexual objectification.  Puritanism and capitalism, hand in hand.

I’m sometimes horrified by the things we do to ourselves.

We’ve really, really got to find a better way.  Soon.
