I feel like it's going to be one way or another: we're going to have either 1)the president and the uppermost government officials with power that isn't checked or 2)the process where they actually have to have permission before they can pursue spying. Sure, I don't really think it's fair, but I don't think they care if we think it's fair or not. I like the safeguard. And as for Obama outside of this, I am incredibly hopeful.

I, too, was disappointed in this seeming reversal of position. However, after listening to his explanation, I can understand why he did it. I wouldn't have voted for it, but I certainly don't feel "betrayed" by the vote.

The fact is: I agree with Obama on over 90% of the issues. To not support him because of this issue is akin to so many people in "red states" who refused to vote for Gore or Kerry (even though both would have been so much better for their problems) because of their pro-choice stance.

Obama is by far the most progressive candidate with a chance to win. More than that, I believe he truly is "different" in that he absolutely wants what is best for this country. He brings a new generation's perspective and a keen intelligence, both of which our government needs badly.

Still, I have no dreamy illusions. Obama is a politician, so his number one goal is to get elected. Yet compare him with most other politicians, and he is certainly much more authentic. For the first time in my life, I'm actually hopeful about a presidential candidate. One issue (or several) won't dim that hope.

Before November, I hope to donate both my time and my money to his campaign.

I felt betrayed by this as well. Politics tend to be picking the lesser of two evils. I will probably still vote Obama but alot of my hopes are diminished.
I am glad I didn't dontate time or money to his campaign.

I'm still hopeful.
But I agree that it is probably a waste of time to think that politicians will ever be anything other than politicians. :-)
