I want a world…

Tuesday, April 8th, 2008

Inspired by another (somewhat less implausible) list of a different sort by Katie.

I want a world with great weather.
I want a world free of hate and fear.
I want a world full of people who want to change.
I want a world that makes me smile.
I want a world that provides for everyone.
I want a world without advertising.
I want a world where sugar is good for me.
I want a world that knows what I’m talking about.
I want a world where food doesn’t hurt me.
I want a world guided by love.
I want a world that tries as hard as I do.
I want a world with lots of rainbows.
I want a world where I know I’m safe.
I want a world that has no concept of "profit".
I want a world where all life is valued for its own being.
I want a world where pets don’t shed.
I want a world filled with grace.
I want a world that I want to live in.
I want a world that wants me to be who I am.

The ABC’s Are Not Religious

Taboo & Capitalism

Thursday, March 27th, 2008

I’ve just had an epiphany.  While pondering our culture’s twisted relationship with sex, I suddenly realized why it is disgraced on the one hand and sensationalized on the other.  Sex sells.  Or, more specifically, sex sells precisely because it’s maintained as a taboo.  If sexuality was something that everyone already has and can share with anyone who’s willing absolutely free, then they can’t sell it to us.  But by taking it away from us through denigration, they create a demand for which they can then provide a supply in the form of commoditized sexual objectification.  Puritanism and capitalism, hand in hand.

I’m sometimes horrified by the things we do to ourselves.

We’ve really, really got to find a better way.  Soon.
