Scary

Sunday, July 27th, 2008

The Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church was the very first church I ever went to on purpose.  I only went a couple of times, but it was a major milestone on my early spiritual path.

This morning a man walked into the church during a children’s play and opened fire with a shotgun.  He killed one adult and injured seven more, six of which may or may not make it.

I really have no words.

The Dark Knight: B+

Sunday, July 20th, 2008

I’m sure this will get me lynched in many geek circles, but I was a touch disappointed by The Dark Knight.  Don’t get me wrong, it was a good movie.  But on the heels of Batman Begins and with the near reverent tones in which it was being spoken of, I had hoped for more.  It was a bit too long and tried to do a bit too much (the Two-Face arc should have been in a separate movie).  Ledger felt like he was trying just a bit too hard with The Joker.  And my biggest complaint is Batman himself.  The Dark Knight was about pretty much everyone else other than the actual dark knight.  There was very little character exposition or development for him in this one (where it was the centerpiece of Batman Begins).

That said, it was still a quality film.  The look and feel were still spot-on and the writing and production were top-notch.  And I like that they managed to directly address human hope and frailty without being cheesy.  In short, it’s well worth seeing, just don’t buy the hype.

Elders?

Saturday, July 19th, 2008

I don’t suppose anyone knows where I can find some Elders?

I do mean the capital-e sort of Elders.  The sort who have received the wisdom of their ancestors and lived long enough to learn what it means.  The sort that had already been there and done that before I was even born.  The sort that don’t need myopic dogmas or clever theories because they have actual experience.  And the sort that are happy to tell you all about it because that’s what Elders do.

I have attempted to patch together some wisom, but I don’t really know what it means.  I think I might be getting there, but I don’t have any idea how to do that.  And I’m trying to shed dogmas and theories as best I can, but experience is proving tricky to come by.

So, I need myself some proper Elders.  The only problem is I don’t think Western culture has had Elders readily available for quite a long time.  By this point, I’m guessing that they’re very nearly extinct in these parts.  I’d be happy to look elsewhere, but I don’t know where to start looking.

If you have any suggestions, I’d be happy to hear them.  :)
