OK, that didn’t last long

I should have known better.

Obama just reversed his position on the latest domestic spying bill and is now supporting it.

Goodbye, brave leadership.  Hello, big brother.

The next time I make hopeful noises about politics, somebody slap me.

OK, it’s official…

…I am now an Obama supporter.  He has just announced that, to completely free his campaign from lobbyist bribes, he will not be participating in the public financing system for the general election.  He is giving up millions of dollars because he refuses to take dirty money.  Combined with the unprecedented speeches he has given on issues such as race and religion, this makes me willing to believe this man is actually who he seems to be: a brave, intelligent, and compassionate leader.  In short, I think we have finally found an honest politician.

3d6 De-Randomizer

I’ve made a point-buy system to replace the old 3d6 attribute roll for AD&D-based games.

Check it out.  :)

The Spirit of Gygax Lives On

Wednesday, June 18th, 2008

I’ve been looking over the new fourth edition of Dungeons & Dragons.  It feels like a video game on paper, which is a real shame.  But it got me nostalgic for the good ol’ days.  A little poking around the ‘Net about the first edition days revealed something rather interesting:

Gary Gygax published his original campaign setting.

And I mean his original campaign setting.  The one he ran his friends through for thirty years.  It is being released as Castle Zagyg.  (OK, the name is a bit indulgent.)

It’s based on a rules-light system called Castles & Crusades that’s intended to capture the feel of classic AD&D without getting bogged down in mechanics.

As for Castle Zagyg, it’s still in mid-publication.  It seems that Gygax had a truly enormous body of material accumulated and it’s taking some time to get it all in print.  The core setting is out and the first major adventure series sounds like it will be released pretty soon.  Fortunately, Gygax’s family has given permission to continue this work after his passing, so it sounds like there will be a lot more to come.

I confess, I am tempted.  I haven’t played in years and I don’t know who I’d actually get to join me, but to adventure through the land of the man himself sounds like one hell of a ride.
