I’ve started playing with Visual C# Express. Microsoft has released it for free(!), so I dove in. I’ve not programmed in C# before (or any object-oriented language, for that matter), so I’ve got a bit of a learning curve. But it’s not too bad. I’m already whipping up a program to connect to an IMAP account and scan the inbox with SpamAssassin. It works great so far, but when I run SpamAssassin under Windows, it bogs down the whole machine and takes about ten seconds per email. That won’t do at all. So I’ll have to look into that. Regardless, I’m having fun and it’s nice to have the time do so.
On a tangent, I got my first comment spam today. I feel all grown up now!

I turned in the “final” draft of my degree project and did my degree project presentation today. The presentation went very well. There were about fifteen people there and they all seemed to enjoy it. As for the project itself, I suspect this final version isn’t all that final. The drama mentioned below was never really resolved (I’m still not sure quite what they want me to write), so it’s likely that I’ll have another round of revisions to squeeze in before graduation. But, at least hypothetically, I am now done. I have a few class evaluations to write next week (my half of our equivalent of grades), but I have had my last class and I have handed in my last assignment.

I’m in the middle of a drama with my degree project board. I don’t care to re-hash all the details, but I feel like I’ve not handled it very well. On the other hand, they don’t seem to be willing to see my point. I suspect that in the end I’m going to do it my way and they’re going to make a bad remark about it in my evaluation. Which isn’t really going to make anybody happy. And now I’m all stressed out and I can’t settle my mind enough to prepare a presentation which is due in a few hours.

I invite you to look at my permalink settings in WordPress:
You’ll notice that what it does not say is /%category%/%postname%/. Yet, somehow, that is exactly what I get. I thought that with this setting I could arrange my pages however I want and retain the same permalink. This turns out to not be the case. So, for example, when I moved my Netflix Widget page under “Projects”, suddenly the permalink turned out to not be so perma. I’d really love it if the next release at the very least accurately reflected the actual behavior or, even better, let me make permalinks that don’t change when I move the pages around. Grr.
Update:
It turns out that parent pages and post categories are two different things, and are thus handled differently. Nonetheless, I would very much like a way to remove the parent page from the permalink of a child page.

I’ve been piling on the plugins today. I have added:
Email Immunizer - Obfuscates email addresses. Take that, spam bots.
My Link Order - Lets me re-sort my links and link categories.
Sidebar Widgets - Lets me easily manage my sidebar content.
Netflix Plugin - Displays my current Netflix rentals. I also tweaked it to slightly resize the DVD cover images so they would fit nicely in one row.
And to really flex my geek, I wrote a widget wrapper!
Netflix Widget - Displays the Netflix plugin inside a sidebar widget.
I also added an “About me” section, full of very important information.
Whee!
